From Bad To Worse

It's
been a wild ride! Thinking you were secure by sheltering in place has
given you a serious reality check. Within the first week, things were
fairly quiet. Neighbors helping neighbors with basic supplies, friends
and family coming by to offer comfort and support. Mandatory curfews
and water rationing are in effect.
The second week things begin getting more intense and people are on
edge. Local government assistance begins to dry up and word is the
electricity is still weeks away from being restored. You have heard of
a few people in your community dying because of medical conditions. The
daily trip to the supermarket to purchase the rapidly dwindling stock,
has you using the last of your hard cash. A pawn booth was setup in
front of the store where you could trade-in gold or silver jewelry for
a few dollars. But, after the second time getting robbed, the vendor
hired armed guards.
The third week began with the shooting death of a disgruntled pawn
customer unhappy with the horrible exchange rate. While the prices
skyrocketed for the few remaining items in the store, the vultures
acting as brokers, halved the amount of cash for valuables. Soon after,
the pawn booth disappeared. Water to residential homes is now shut off
every other day.
The fourth week was horrific. Reports of armed men ~raiding~ affluent
peoples homes has the neighborhoods setting up local watch groups. But
most distressing is that the water has not come back on. An entire
apartment complex burnt to the ground because there was no water at the
hydrants. FEMA trucks started showing up handing out one case of water
per household. Even with assurances from the authorities, people are
becoming desperate. A few are losing their mind and attacking others in
a seemingly blind rage.
By the fifth and sixth week, society has collapsed. Food stores have mostly been depleted
and no water except from the nearby stream is available. In a brief
afternoon shower, people were shot and killed over buckets of
rainwater. Three city blocks on the edge of town have been barricaded
up and the inhabitants are shooting at anyone that comes near. You have
not seen a single person working on the power lines. The government is
not coming to save you.
You have a tough decision to make...

On
the fourth night of you bugging in, you become alert to a ruckus on
your street. You hear several gun shots and the sound of screams.
Within moments, bullets fly through your boarded up windows! Peering
out into the darkness, you barely make out several figures dragging one
of your lady neighbors down the street by the hair.
You grab up your firearm and head to the door. But just as you get
there, you hear glass breaking in one of the bedrooms followed by a
huge whooshing sound. A molitove was hurled into your home and the fire
is spreading quick. You grab a fire extingusher and spray it futilely
into the room, but the fire is too intense. As you empty the foam from
the container, you hear a crashing sound from the front door. Several
people wearing masks and carring baseball bats burst in.
You dash for your weapon and the thugs take cover. From behind you, you
see someone shining a flashlight through the boards criss-crossing over
a window. You're getting surrounded and your home is filling with heavy
smoke...

minutes after reaching cover in the treeline, you look back to see your
home engulfed in flames. You watch in horror as all your belongings
goes up in smoke. With just the clothes on your back, your trusty
weapon and a large bulky backpack, you're now homeless and on your own.
At least you did your due diligence after the solar flare hit and
cobbled together a decent Bug-Out Bag which includes...

After
an uneventful, but restless night, you stand at a literal crossroads.
Off the the right is a sprawling city from which you just heard gun
shots. A ways down to your left is the citys rural suburbs where smoke
still rises from burning buildings. Behind you is a forested hillside
and further beyond that, snow covered mountain peaks.
You know you can find shelter and food in the city, but you can also
find danger. Rival gangs control the streets and if any of them
consider you a threat or belonging to a different tribe, they will have
no issue offing you. There are plenty of places to hide and by the look
of things, with it's rapidly shrinking population, the place may be
deserted in a month or two.
The suburbs seem to be over-run with bandits and squatters. Food and
water can be had for a price. And too often, that price is steep. Some
residents are barricaded in their homes hoping no one notices them,
even going as far as scattering clothing and dicarded food containers
in the front yard to make others think the place has already been
ransacked. It's not fooling anyone.
Roughing it in the wilderness has it's challenges. You may be able to
find water, but food will be hard to come by. But, at least the
Mountain Lions and Bears don't have guns.

You've
made your decision and as you near the outskirts, you see a lone woman
walking briskly toward you. She repeatly looks back over her shoulder
with concern, then back to you. As she approaces, looking you up and
down, you can see she has been crying. She too has a bag slung over her
shoulder.
"Don't go that way. Maurauders are rounding everyone up." She says,
obviously determining you not to be a threat. "It would be safer to
hide out in the woods until they've gone."
She strides past you without a glance and in such a determined manner,
you feel she is probably right. You turn to follow her and glance back
to make sure she was not pursued. Seeing nobody, you quicken your pace
to catch up.
